Gillian Armstrong brings Louisa May Alcott's novel to the big screen again, in this excellent and faithful adaptation as we watch the March sisters live and grow in post-Civil War America.

Louisa May Alcott's autobiographical account of her life with her three sisters in Concord, Massachusetts in the 1860s. With their father fighting in the American Civil War, sisters Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth are at home with their mother, a very outspoken women for her time. The story tells of how the sisters grow up, find love and find their place in the world.

Supporting Women Filmmakers

Everyone is well cast: Winona Ryder is perfect as Jo; Susan Sarandon is Mrs March; Christian Bale an excellent Laurie; and Gabriel Byrne is Professor Bhaer. Kirsten Dunst and Claire Danes showed acting ability beyond their years. Gillian May Armstrong is an award-winning Australian feature film and documentary director, who specializes in period drama. Her films often feature female perspectives and protagonists.
